Freedom's just another word for...
'Tainted Love' by Soft Cell
'Thriller' by Michael Jackson
'Little Red Corvette' by Prince
I don't know about you, but there’s a long list of songs in my head to which I know all the words.
Whenever one of them comes on the radio, I’ll automatically start to sing along, ESPECIALLY if I’m driving somewhere on a beautiful day and am not in any hurry. (This is one of my favorite things to do.)
The other day, 'Me and Bobby McGee' by Janis Joplin came on. And I started singing.
But this time, one line REALLY stuck out.
“Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.”
It got me thinking about what it’s like when you’re at the point of feeling like you have nothing left to lose.
Prior to this moment, you may feel hopeless. Frustrated. Like you have no control over what’s going on. You might feel afraid and really anxious.
Then at some point, a line will be crossed and you’ll think, “screw it.”
You realize that you can no longer accept whatever’s happening, and that staying in that situation is just. not. worth it.
It’s at this moment that something amazing happens. It’s a moment of freedom.
As you throw off the chains that have been holding you down, a whole new set of possibilities open up for you. Even if you don’t know what the right choice is for you yet, you step into the space of seeing that you DO have some viable alternative options.
And then? You take action.
On this Independence day, as you’re grilling, at the beach or watching fireworks, consider where in your life you’re at a breaking point.
How will you know when you reach the point of having nothing left to lose?
What needs to happen for you to cross over into that mindset?
And finally, what does 'freedom' mean to you?
